PEN is a cluster of five schools setup independently of the Ministry of Education with the objective of working cooperatively to provide a cost effective, reliable Information Technology (IT) resource for their students. The schools are Glenview, Maraeroa, Windley, Brandon Intermediate and Porirua College.

PEN is unique in New Zealand as its members focus is to work together to reduce the IT costs of each individual school and provide a reliable IT tool.

PEN was established from a combination of school funding, funding from the Ministry of Education, contributions by commercial organisations and fundraising, as well as community labour in “cable days” – community laying cable by hand to save costs.

PEN was conceived from ICAN (Improving Co-operative Achievement Networks) which is a cluster of eight Porirua East schools. Four of the PEN schools are also ICAN schools so there is still a close association and sharing of knowledge between the two groups.

The focus of PEN schools is on student achievement and the removal of barriers to achievement through innovation. It is what sets the Porirua East Network apart from other school networks and it typifies the Kiwi can do, will do attitude. PEN schools share the belief that through education and opportunity their students can reach their full potential.
